DP World to invest US$90m in Luanda cargo terminal

DP World has secured a 10-year extension to its concession for the multipurpose cargo terminal at Angola’s Port of Luanda, taking the agreement through to 2051. The company will invest a further US$90 million over the next two years to expand the terminal and raise its design capacity to 1.2 million TEUs.
The planned expansion will extend the quay by 222 metres and add 10 hectares to the operating area. DP World will also add three ship-to-shore cranes and 12 semi-automated rubber-tyred gantry cranes, allowing the terminal to handle two Post-Panamax vessels at the same time.
Since starting operations in 2021, DP World has invested more than US$260 million in the terminal. Cargo volumes have nearly doubled from 177,000 TEUs to more than 350,000 TEUs.
The expansion is expected to support larger vessels and new shipping services, improving cargo flows and trade links across Angola and Central Africa.
“The ability to handle larger vessels will support new shipping services and strengthen the terminal’s potential as a gateway for West and Central Africa,” said Mohammed Akoojee, CEO and MD, Africa, DP World.
