Etihad Cargo has transported two rescued brown bears from Moscow to Dublin via Abu Dhabi, helping complete a five-year international rescue effort. The bears, Bu and Tyapa, arrived at Wild Ireland, a wildlife sanctuary in County Donegal, on 4 August 2026 and moved into their new forest habitat in September.

The shipment involved specialist animal handling and transit arrangements at Zayed International Airport, coordinated with Abu Dhabi Airports and Velora. The operation highlights the role of air cargo operators in supporting wildlife rescue missions across borders, where animal welfare and careful handling are essential.

Bu, a former circus bear, and Tyapa, previously kept at a petting zoo, had spent years in unsuitable conditions in Dagestan, Russia. More than 100 people across several countries took part in the rescue, led by Wild Ireland founder and director Killian McLaughlin.

Etihad Cargo holds IATA CEIV Live Animals certification, which sets standards for the safe and careful transport of live animals.

Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer at Etihad, said: "At Etihad Cargo, we believe our global network and expertise can play a meaningful role in supporting wildlife conservation and animal welfare. Bu and Tyapa's rescue is a powerful example of how collaboration can give animals a second chance at life. We are proud to have supported this remarkable mission alongside our partners, demonstrating that what we do goes beyond connecting markets to making a positive difference."

The bears are now adapting to their new surroundings. A documentary about the five-year rescue mission, produced by Abu Dhabi-based Moondance Productions, is expected to be released in 2027.
