UAE implements 65-tonne load limit for heavy vehicles



The UAE has recently set 65 tonnes as maximum permissible weight of heavy vehicles plying along national roads. The new federal law will come into effect starting October 1. The new legislation boosts the country’s transportation and logistics sectors seeks to preserve the road infrastructure in the UAE and and contribute to the growth and development of the national economy. According to general norms, vehicles weighing over 2.5 tonnes (when empty) are considered heavy-duty. These include commercial automobiles used to transport goods or passengers, prime movers, semi-trailers, trailer combinations and articulated trucks. As per the estimate by Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, 20,000 heavy vehicles, including border-crossing trucks, are covered by the new federal law. Exempted are heavy vehicles owned by security, military, police, and civil defence authorities.
