China Eastern Airlines has launched a new all-cargo route connecting Shanghai, Riyadh, and Budapest, marking its first fifth-freedom cargo service in the Middle East. Operating three times a week, the route creates a direct logistics corridor between China, the Middle East, and Europe, enhancing trade flows along the growing “Air Silk Road.”
The Shanghai–Riyadh–Budapest service is designed to support the movement of goods across key markets, providing a faster and more efficient link for exporters and importers. By stopping in Riyadh, the route not only serves the Saudi market but also strengthens connectivity to Europe via Budapest, creating a seamless path for global trade.
This initiative reflects the airline’s broader strategy to expand its cargo footprint internationally and tap into emerging trade lanes connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The route is expected to carry a wide range of goods, including high-value and time-sensitive shipments, catering to growing demand for reliable air cargo services across the region.
By leveraging the fifth-freedom rights, China Eastern can optimise aircraft utilisation while offering competitive logistics solutions. The move also highlights the growing role of Middle Eastern hubs in linking Asia with European markets and streamlining global supply chains.
