LODD Autonomous’ Hili, the UAE’s first hybrid heavy cargo VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft, successfully completed its first flight today, marking a milestone in the nation’s aviation and cargo sector. The historic flight was attended by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE (Ruler of Abu Dhabi); His Excellency Faisal Al Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary-General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, and Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer, Etihad Airways.

The flight comes shortly after Etihad Airways signed a memorandum of understanding with LODD Autonomous to become the first operator of the innovative aircraft. Hili is expected to transform cargo operations in Abu Dhabi, offering faster, more flexible transport solutions for heavy goods while showcasing homegrown technological capabilities.

LODD Autonomous highlighted that Hili combines hybrid propulsion with VTOL capabilities, enabling it to take off and land in compact spaces, a feature that could redefine logistics in urban and remote areas. Officials described the maiden flight as a national achievement, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s vision for innovation and leadership in advanced aviation technologies. The success of Hili places the UAE among the few countries developing hybrid VTOL cargo aircraft, signalling a new era for local aerospace and the growing role of technology in logistics and supply chain solutions.
