Hamad International Airport (HIA) is fast reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading air freight hubs, driven by strong year-on-year growth and expanding cargo capabilities. The airport handled 2.6 million tonnes of cargo, marking a 12 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Looking ahead, HIA is positioned for even stronger performance. If current trends continue, the airport is expected to reach 3.7 to 4 million tonnes of cargo by 2030, supported by Qatar Airways Cargo’s expanding network and deeper collaboration with global freighter operators. This will further solidify Doha’s role as a major re-export and consolidation hub connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa.

In Q3 2024, HIA processed 670,643 tonnes, a 13.5 per cent rise, with volumes remaining steady throughout the quarter. Growth is supported by high-value general cargo, pharmaceuticals, healthcare shipments, and the surge in cross-border e-commerce.

To sustain this momentum, the airport is focusing on key strategic initiatives. These include developing advanced GDP/GDP+ pharma corridors, expanding certified cool-chain facilities, integrating e-commerce fulfilment centres near the airport, and strengthening resilience to airspace and geopolitical disruptions. These efforts keep HIA firmly on track to becoming a dominant global cargo leader.
