DP World has expanded capacity at Jeddah Islamic Port with the addition of three semi-automated quay cranes, reinforcing Red Sea trade resilience as shipping activity rebounds. The upgrade lifts ship-to-shore crane numbers from 14 to 17, with each unit capable of handling 65 tonnes, significantly enhancing berth productivity and enabling simultaneous servicing of multiple ultra-large vessels.

The move comes as container volumes surge, with the terminal handling over 1.3 million TEUs in 2025, more than doubling year-on-year throughput as Red Sea services resumed. Part of an $800 million modernisation programme, the expansion has already increased capacity to 4 million TEUs, with a roadmap to reach 5 million.

Enhanced automation, deeper berths and expanded inland connectivity position Jeddah as a critical logistics hub, supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 ambitions and ensuring efficient, secure cargo flows amid evolving regional maritime challenges.
