Saudi Arabian Railways and Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane are set to develop rail freight and logistics projects across the Middle East and North Africa region, aiming to improve cargo movement and strengthen supply chain links.
The focus is on better connecting rail networks with ports, warehouses and logistics hubs to speed up the movement of goods and reduce reliance on road transport. This is expected to support smoother regional and cross-border freight flows.
Both sides will work on intermodal systems that link rail with road and maritime transport. The goal is to improve efficiency in handling long-distance cargo and reduce delays in shipping operations.
FS Italiane CEO Stefano Antonio Donnarumma remarked, “The MoU with SAR establishes a strategic collaboration in a region of great importance like the Middle East and North Africa. This agreement is part of the broader institutional dialogue between Italy and Saudi Arabia in transport and infrastructure. Our goal is to explore new opportunities in rail, infrastructure, and sustainable mobility.”
Digital tools will also be used to manage freight operations. Artificial intelligence and data systems will help track shipments, plan routes and improve coordination across logistics networks.
The agreement also includes plans for training and testing facilities in Saudi Arabia to support rail freight development. A joint working group will oversee implementation and focus on freight-related projects across the region.
