Oman has carried out a drone-based cargo trial, transporting 100 kilograms of medical supplies from Muscat to Al Jabal Al Akhdar over a distance of about 100 kilometers. The move is part of efforts to explore advanced air mobility systems for logistics and transport use in the country.

The test shows how unmanned aircraft could be used in the future to move urgent goods faster, especially in areas where road travel is difficult due to terrain. This can help improve delivery times for medical and emergency supplies and support more flexible supply chains.

Advanced air mobility includes electric aircraft and drones designed for short- to mid-range transport. These systems are being explored globally as a way to reduce pressure on roads and lower emissions in transport networks.

Rawiya Nasser Al Adawi, Director General of Civil Aviation Regulation, said the experiment is part of building a regulatory framework for drone operations and preparing systems to manage air traffic for unmanned aircraft. It is also working on rules, safety systems, and testing environments for future operations.

The programme is linked to Oman Vision 2040 and the National Aviation Strategy 2040, which focus on technology-driven transport systems. Authorities said the goal is to create a controlled system that allows safe use of drones for logistics, health, and other services while integrating them into existing airspace management.
