Cargo movement across Saudi Arabia’s road network increased during the first half of 2026, with more than 3.7 million truck trips recorded, according to data from the Roads General Authority. The period also saw the opening of 40 new road projects covering more than 900 kilometres, supporting freight connectivity across key regions.
The rise in truck activity highlights the importance of road transport in moving goods between ports, border crossings and economic centres. Improved road links can help reduce transport times, support supply chain operations and improve the movement of cargo across the Kingdom.
The new projects were launched in Makkah, Madinah, Aseer, Eastern and Qassim regions, strengthening connections between cities and industrial areas. During the first half of the year, the authority also issued more than 32,000 permits for road-related services, helping streamline procedures for businesses operating on the network.
Saudi Arabia also expanded the use of technology in road management through smart control centres that use artificial intelligence to monitor road conditions, improve maintenance and support faster response to disruptions affecting transport operations.
