Türkiye has announced a major expansion plan for its rail freight network, aiming to significantly increase capacity and connectivity by 2053. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said the total rail network is expected to reach 28,590 kilometers by mid-century, with 17,287 kilometers planned by 2028. The country is also expanding logistics infrastructure, including branch lines and freight corridors.
The plan focuses on strengthening cargo movement across the country by improving rail links between industrial zones, ports and border crossings. Authorities say this will help move goods faster and reduce pressure on road transport, supporting exports and domestic supply chains.
Currently, Türkiye operates around 11,000 kilometers of rail, which has grown to nearly 14,009 kilometers, including 2,251 kilometers of high-speed lines. Freight capacity is also set to expand, with branch lines increasing from 439 kilometers to 608 kilometers by 2028.
Logistics centers will grow from 13 to 25, improving cargo handling and distribution efficiency. Several key freight corridors are under construction, linking major cities and extending toward eastern borders, which is expected to improve regional trade connectivity and
streamline cargo flows across the network.
