Aqaba boosts capacity for regional trade

Aqaba is planning to expand cargo handling capacity as transit trade, particularly shipments bound for Iraq, continues to grow. The measures include additional container yard and storage capacity, faster cargo handling and improved arrangements for transit and empty containers.

The expansion will give shipping and logistics operators more space to manage growing cargo volumes and support smoother movement of goods through Jordan. Additional storage areas will also provide greater flexibility for handling transit cargo and empty containers as regional trade flows increase.

Transport and Labour Minister Nidal Qatamin said improving cargo movement and port efficiency would strengthen Jordan’s role as a regional transport and logistics hub while supporting its connections with neighbouring markets.

The plans are expected to support the wider development of trade routes linking Jordan with Iraq and other regional markets. Increased handling capacity and improved cargo processes can help logistics operators manage higher volumes and provide more efficient connections for businesses using Jordan as a gateway to neighbouring countries.

The measures form part of efforts to strengthen Aqaba’s role in supporting regional trade and cargo movement.
