DP World is adding cargo-handling capacity to Syria’s supply chain with three new mobile harbour cranes at Tartous, increasing cargo-handling capacity by about 40%. The equipment will support container, bulk and breakbulk cargo and improve the movement of goods through the country.
The investment is part of DP World’s wider $800 million programme in Syria. It includes additional cargo equipment, dredging and quay upgrades aimed at improving vessel turnaround and reducing supply chain bottlenecks.
Mohammad Shihab, Executive Vice President, DP World, Egypt and the Levant, added: “Strategically located on Syria’s Mediterranean coast, the Port of Tartous has the potential to become a vital trade and logistics gateway, connecting Syria with key regional markets including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Türkiye, while strengthening trade flows across the Eastern Mediterranean, the Gulf, Europe and North Africa.
Our investment is therefore aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing supply chain bottlenecks and strengthening connectivity, and providing businesses with more reliable access to regional and global markets, while supporting the growth and competitiveness of industries across manufacturing, agriculture and commerce.”
The added capacity could give freight operators and businesses more options for moving goods between Syria and key regional markets, including Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Türkiye. It could also support trade flows linking the Eastern Mediterranean with the Gulf, Europe and North Africa. Further cargo equipment is planned, including forklifts and reach stackers later this year, nine mobile harbour cranes through 2028 and a new quay crane in 2028.
