Egypt is advancing expansion projects at Safaga, Damietta, Alexandria and Sokhna ports, while its high-speed electric rail network is being developed to connect production areas with industrial centres and export gateways. Trial operations on the first rail line are expected to begin in September 2026.

The projects are aimed at improving connections between maritime, rail and road networks, which could make cargo movement more efficient and strengthen supply chains. Better links between inland production areas and ports can also give exporters more options for moving goods to international markets.

The first high-speed rail line will connect Ain Sokhna, New Alamein and Marsa Matrouh. The second and third lines will link agricultural areas, industrial and consumption centres with export ports.

Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir said trial operations on the first line will run for six months from September. He added that the second and third lines will strengthen connections between production and export areas.

The developments form part of Egypt’s wider efforts to strengthen its role in regional trade and logistics by improving links between ports and inland markets.
