Saudi Arabia has introduced its first hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck with autonomous driving technology, a move that could support cleaner and more efficient freight transport across long-distance logistics routes.
Designed for heavy cargo operations, the truck runs on hydrogen fuel and produces zero carbon emissions during use. It can travel up to 1,500 kilometres on a single refuelling cycle and can be refuelled within minutes, addressing some of the operational challenges associated with long-haul trucking.
The vehicle is equipped with autonomous driving capabilities and digital systems that allow continuous software updates and performance monitoring. These technologies could help logistics operators improve fleet efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance road safety.
“The launch reflects growing interest in alternative fuels and automation within the transport and logistics sector as companies seek to lower emissions while maintaining the speed and reliability of cargo movements,” stated a company spokesperson.
For the logistics industry, hydrogen-powered trucks offer a potential solution for decarbonising heavy freight transport without compromising range or payload capacity. Combined with autonomous technologies, they could help streamline supply chain operations and improve productivity on major freight corridors.
The project marks another step in the adoption of advanced transport technologies as the Kingdom works to strengthen its logistics infrastructure and support more sustainable cargo movement.
