Kenya Airways Cargo currently handles approximately 65 million kilograms of cargo annually through a combination of dedicated freighter aircraft and passenger aircraft belly capacity, with perishables accounting for a significant share of outbound volumes. According to Fitsum Abadi, Managing Director, Kenya Airways Cargo, key export commodities include flowers, fruits, vegetables, seafood, and other fresh products, reflecting Kenya’s position as a leading exporter of high-value agricultural produce.
To support growing demand and strengthen Kenya’s export competitiveness, the airline is pursuing the acquisition of additional widebody freighter capacity, which would significantly increase available cargo uplift and help address persistent capacity constraints. While discussions with potential partners are ongoing, no deployment timeline has yet been confirmed.
Abadi noted that Kenyan exporters continue to face higher airfreight costs than competing regional hubs, impacting the global competitiveness of Kenya’s fresh produce sector. He emphasized that expanding air cargo capacity must be complemented by supportive aviation and trade policies, including the strict application of reciprocity principles in bilateral air service agreements to ensure a level playing field for Kenyan carriers.
Beyond traditional European markets, Kenyan horticultural exporters are increasingly targeting high-growth destinations in the Middle East and Gulf region, where demand for fresh produce continues to rise. Enhanced cargo capacity would improve market access, strengthen supply chain reliability, and support the diversification of Kenya’s export destinations, reinforcing the country’s position as a leading perishables export hub in Africa.
