Oman is taking a big step toward smarter cities and modern logistics. The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) has signed a deal with the Ibn Firnas Drone Centre to test and develop new technologies in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD).
The partnership will use drones and artificial intelligence to improve how the zone is run.
Early projects include monitoring port cranes, inspecting warehouses, and even delivering parcels and food. These initiatives aim to make logistics faster, safer, and more efficient.
SEZAD, with its 18-square-kilometre AI zone, will serve as a testing ground for smart city solutions. The projects will also help track cargo, manage supply chains, and support security and environmental monitoring.
Officials said the collaboration will go beyond technology trials. The plan includes training programs, support for startups, and services for companies operating in SEZAD. The goal is to make the zone a model for smart cities in the region while attracting investment and boosting commercial activity.
With drones already proving their value in inspections, mapping, and deliveries, Oman is positioning SEZAD as a hub for innovation, advanced logistics, and digital services across the Gulf.
