Work has started on expanding SAL’s cargo facilities at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, with Rowad Modern Engineering leading the project. The upgrade will add new infrastructure and modernise existing systems to boost cargo handling capacity, improve efficiency, and support growing trade volumes.
The project focuses on both expansion and refurbishment, including new support facilities and upgraded operational systems. It is designed to improve how cargo is processed, stored, and moved through the airport, while maintaining operations during construction. The facility is also being built with sustainability in mind and is targeting LEED Gold certification.
For the logistics sector, the biggest impact lies in faster turnaround times, better handling capacity, and more reliable operations. Improved infrastructure will help reduce bottlenecks, especially during peak periods, and support smoother movement of goods across supply chains.
The expansion also strengthens Riyadh’s position as a key cargo hub by increasing its ability to handle higher volumes and more complex shipments. This is expected to benefit freight forwarders, airlines, and shippers through more efficient services, lower delays, and better connectivity, supporting Saudi Arabia’s wider goal of becoming a global logistics hub.
