Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has given a contract to OHL Arabia and Hassan Allam Construction Saudi Limited to build a 22.7-km rail link for freight in Dammam 2nd Industrial City. The line will connect industrial facilities in the Eastern Province with wider rail and logistics routes.

The project is mainly aimed at improving how goods are moved from factories and industrial plants to ports and distribution centres. By using rail instead of road, it is expected to reduce heavy truck traffic on highways around Dammam. This can help ease congestion and make cargo movement more stable for industries that depend on regular shipments, especially in petrochemicals and manufacturing.

The shift to rail freight may also support lower transport delays caused by road bottlenecks and improve reliability in supply chains. It is designed to handle large volumes of industrial cargo, which can improve efficiency for export and import flows in the region.

The rail link is part of Saudi Arabia’s wider effort to expand freight rail infrastructure and strengthen industrial zones by linking them more directly to national transport networks.
