Oman is advancing airport development plans with a clear focus on air cargo, placing Suhar, Muscat and Musandam at the centre of its logistics strategy. Suhar Airport is being positioned as a dedicated cargo and courier gateway for northern Oman, Muscat International Airport is moving ahead with new cargo facilities, and future runway expansion at Musandam Airport is expected to support widebody cargo operations.

Suhar Airport is seen as a strategic alternative to Muscat for freight movements, offering flexibility during disruptions and peak periods. Its location near the Port of Sohar, the Sohar Free Zone and major industrial zones makes it well suited to handle cargo linked to manufacturing, petrochemicals and trade flows.

At Muscat International Airport, cargo infrastructure is being developed alongside an aircraft maintenance building. These upgrades are aimed at improving handling capacity and supporting growing demand for air freight, particularly for urgent and high-value goods.

Musandam Airport, which will be developed in phases, is part of Oman’s longer-term cargo ambitions. While initial works focus on basic operations, the second phase includes a longer runway capable of handling widebody aircraft such as Airbus A330s, A350s and Boeing 777s and 787s. This would open the door for future long-haul cargo services.
