Work on US$3bn Oman-UAE freight trains to begin soon

Construction of US$3-billion freight trains on Hafeet Rail network between Oman-UAE, will begin shortly. The network will include two 2.5-km-long tunnels and 36 bridges, as per a statement. The freight trains will reach up to 120 kmph, while passenger trains will go to maximum speed of 200 km per hour. The freight trains will transport 25,000 tonnes of general cargo in one trip, reducing CO2 emissions by 10 times compared to other modes of transport. Hafeet Rail will have freight as well as passenger stations in Sohar and Al Ain, and another freight station in Buraimi. Oman Rail, part of Asyad Group and the UAE’s Etihad Rail had signed a contract in September 2022 to launch Oman and Etihad Rail Company—now rebranded as Hafeet Rail—to build a railway network connecting Sohar Port to the UAE rail network.
