Gulf Cooperation Council countries is set to improve transport and logistics in the Middle East through rail, ports and customs integration. The six countries are moving ahead with regional transport integration, with the GCC Railway project forming a key part of plans to improve the movement of goods across member states. The rail network is expected to connect key cities, ports and economic zones, creating a unified system to support faster and more efficient cargo transport.
GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi said the railway project represents a strategic step toward deeper economic integration. He emphasized the need to keep land, sea and air transport operating smoothly and ensure freight movements continue without interruption.
Work is also focused on simplifying customs and border procedures to reduce delays in cargo clearance and make cross-border trade more predictable for businesses operating in the region.
Digital systems for tracking shipments, inspection processes and documentation are being considered to improve coordination and speed across logistics operations. The plan also includes developing alternative transport routes to reduce pressure on key corridors and strengthen supply chain resilience.
