Construction of the new cargo terminal at Zayed International Airport has reached 30 per cent completion, marking a major step forward in one of Abu Dhabi’s largest logistics projects. The development has so far recorded more than one million incident-free manhours, reflecting steady progress and strong safety performance. Scheduled to open in 2027, the terminal will double the airport’s cargo handling capacity to 1.5 million tonnes a year. It is being built to support the rapid growth of air freight in the UAE, with next-generation automation, advanced sorting systems and expanded cold-chain facilities. These upgrades will enable the airport to handle a wider mix of products, from pharmaceuticals and perishables to high-value and special cargo.
The facility will be operated in partnership with the airport’s ground handling provider. Once complete, it is expected to deliver faster processing, smarter workflows and smoother multimodal connections, linking air cargo efficiently with road and sea networks. Officials said the project will strengthen Abu Dhabi’s role in global trade by providing a modern, high-capacity hub for regional and international operators. The new terminal is set to become a key pillar of Zayed International Airport’s long-term logistics strategy and a benchmark for cargo excellence in the region.
