Turkish Cargo has selected Lödige Industries to deliver the next phase of automation for its SMARTIST cargo hub at Istanbul Airport, a move that will increase the facility's annual cargo handling capacity from 2 million tonnes to 4.5 million tonnes. The expansion is expected to help the airline handle rising air freight demand, improve cargo processing and strengthen Istanbul's role as a major global cargo gateway.

The SMARTIST 2.0 project builds on the automated cargo handling systems installed by Lödige Industries during the first phase, which became operational in 2021. The upgraded facility will use new automation and digital systems to improve cargo storage, retrieval and handling processes.

The cargo hub will cover a total enclosed area of 370,000 square metres once the expansion is complete. The automated systems are designed to manage Unit Load Devices (ULDs) and in-house pallets more efficiently, helping reduce turnaround times and support higher cargo volumes.

“With SMARTIST 2.0, Turkish Cargo’s ambition goes far beyond adding capacity. We continue to strengthen our role in global air freight through intelligent infrastructure. The next-generation cargo facility allows us to manage growing volumes without disrupting our operational flow, ensuring a uninterrupted service quality for our customers worldwide. This approach is supported by Lödige Industries’ expertise in advanced cargo handling systems.” said Murat Yalçın KIRCA, Cargo Operations (Global) Vice President at Turkish Cargo.

The additional capacity will allow Turkish Cargo to process more freight without disrupting operations as international trade continues to grow. Faster handling and improved cargo flow are also expected to benefit freight forwarders and supply chain partners using Istanbul Airport.
